“Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. And A GREAT MULTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE FOLLOWED Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?” (Luke 23:26-31 NKJV, emphasis mine).
The Scriptures quoted above show that A GREAT MULTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE FOLLOWED JESUS as He was led away to Golgotha to be crucified, even though, as we can glean from their behavior at the scene of the crucifixion, not all of the multitude of the people followed Jesus for the right reasons. Some only followed Him to mock Him (see Mark 15:29; Matthew 27:39-40) — they didn’t follow Him because they believed in Him. Others followed just to look on. (Luke 23:35). Similarly, there are many people today that only follow Jesus to mock Him; many false believers and false prophets are following Jesus — mocking Him. Others are following Him just out of curiosity, looking on. And yet, there are many true followers too who genuinely love the Lord. And so we are told that among the multitude that followed Jesus were WOMEN WHO ALSO MOURNED and LAMENTED Him. But Jesus told them not to weep for Him, but to weep for themselves and their children. (see Luke 23:28). Indeed, we (mankind in general) cannot read or listen to the account of Jesus’ crucifixion and weep for Him. No, we should rather weep for ourselves and for our children, because we are the ones that are pitiful, not Him. We are the ones that have sinned and are bound for hell. We are the dry wood — alienated from the life of God. (see Ephesians 4:18). Jesus is the Green Wood — sinless and full of life (see John 5:26) — who stepped in on His own volition to save us. (see John 10:18). He laid down His life out of His own free will — out of His great love, having come into the world for this very purpose; so there is no weeping for Him. But we should weep for ourselves and for our children, especially those who hear the good news of Christ and the eternal life He offers, and yet refuse to accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Jesus asked, “for if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?” (see Luke 23:31). In other words, if they treated Jesus the Green Wood this way; if they subjected the sinless one in whom is life to such cruel punishment and suffering, imagine what would be done to the dry wood — the sinners who have no life in them. Indeed, such sinners would cry and beg for the rocks and mountains to fall on them and hide them, than for them to face the fiery wrath of God that would be revealed in the last day. In the Book of Revelation, we are told that when the sixth seal was opened, “the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” (Revelation 6:15-17).
May you be counted among those of us who have genuinely repented of our sins and follow Jesus because we sincerely believe in Him as our Lord and Savior. Remain blessed.
I share this message, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16 KJV).
